DIGITAL STORYTELLING

Introduction and Description

Digital storytelling has become one of the most dynamic and meaningful approaches for enriching teaching and learning in contemporary education. As schools increasingly seek to foster creativity, digital competence, critical thinking, and student engagement, the ability to integrate narrative and multimedia production into classroom practice has become an essential professional skill for teachers and educational staff. This course — offered in both 5-day and 10-day formats — provides a comprehensive and academically grounded introduction to digital storytelling as a transformative pedagogical method.

Digital storytelling combines the timeless power of narrative with the expressive possibilities of digital media. When used intentionally in schools, it enables learners to explore complex ideas, express their identity, demonstrate understanding, and collaborate in ways that extend far beyond traditional written assignments. For teachers, it opens new opportunities to design inclusive, project-based learning activities that motivate students, support differentiation, and develop key competences aligned with European educational priorities.

Throughout the course, participants examine the pedagogical foundations of narrative learning and the role storytelling plays in cognitive, emotional, and social development. They explore how stories help structure understanding, how multimodal literacy enhances student agency, and how digital storytelling can be used to promote inquiry, creativity, and meaningful knowledge construction in all subject areas. The training also addresses the practical demands of modern classrooms: media literacy, safe online publishing, copyright and Creative Commons standards, GDPR-compliant practices, and the responsible use of digital tools.

The 5-day programme offers an intensive introduction to core concepts and essential tools, providing a strong foundation for teachers seeking to bring storytelling into their professional practice quickly and effectively.

The 10-day programme expands this experience with deeper exploration of animation, interactive narratives, whiteboard video production, curriculum-based explainer videos, and collaborative storytelling projects suitable for Erasmus+, eTwinning, and international school partnerships.

Both formats are highly experiential, enabling participants to develop practical skills through hands-on workshops, peer feedback sessions, and individual mentoring. By the end of the course, educators will have created a complete digital story or multimedia teaching resource that can be directly implemented in their classrooms, as well as a clear vision of how digital storytelling can enrich their curriculum and inspire their learners.

Across Europe, schools and educational organisations are being asked to cultivate digital readiness, media literacy, innovation, and inclusive practice. Digital storytelling responds to all these needs simultaneously. It allows teachers to design learning experiences that are personal yet collaborative, creative yet rigorous, and technologically rich yet pedagogically grounded. This course invites educators to reimagine their teaching through the lens of narrative and to discover how stories — enhanced by digital tools — can become catalysts for deeper learning and meaningful connection.

Preparation

After registration participants will receive pre-course questionnaire which will be used by the trainer to learn about participants’ teaching backgrounds and to assess their exact needs. Before the beginning of the course a basic reading list will be suggested to participants to prepare for the training. Participants will also be asked to publish a presentation about themselves, their professional context and their culture. The presentation will be available on the virtual collaboration platform. It will be used during the first meeting, but it will also be available online to the other participants so that they can have a preliminary knowledge of the group they are going to be part of. Participants will receive information about the country they are going to visit in order to prepare them for their cultural experience.

Follow up

After the course, the participants will be asked to share what they have learned with the rest of the staff in their schools. Since they will all join the virtual collaboration platform they will be able to further discuss and deepen the understanding of the themes of this course and therefore keep on learning. Moreover, they will be encouraged to share materials showing how they are using what they have learned in their everyday work in terms of ideas, photos, videos, lesson plans, assessment and self-assessment forms, etc. creating an open educational resource available to everyone else from the group. Thanks to the virtual collaboration platform they will all be networked which will provide greater opportunities to develop future partnerships and projects. Further books and articles to deepen the topic and contacts with some other practitioners all over Europe and in the world will be suggested by the trainer. The methods shared and explored and the bibliography given will allow the participants to complete and improve their educational path.
