CULTURAL HERITAGE IN ACTION

(RELATING PAST TO PRESENT THROUGH EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING, STUDY VISITS  AND SIMULATIONS)

Introduction and Description

Cultural heritage represents far more than the physical remnants of the past; it encompasses the values, beliefs, knowledge and traditions through which communities understand themselves and relate to one another. In an increasingly interconnected world, schools and educational organisations play a crucial role in helping learners engage with cultural heritage as a resource for identity formation, intercultural dialogue and active citizenship. This course—offered in both 5-day and expanded 10-day formats—provides teachers with the conceptual foundations, experiential tools and pedagogical strategies needed to integrate cultural heritage meaningfully into contemporary educational practice.

Through a rich blend of theoretical input, experiential workshops, guided study visits, simulations and creative project work, participants explore how heritage connects past and present and how it can inspire inquiry, critical thinking and creativity in learners of all ages. Field trips and on-site learning experiences expose participants to tangible and intangible heritage in authentic contexts, enabling them to examine cultural narratives, traditions and human experiences through direct engagement. These encounters are supported by inquiry-based methods, object-based learning, embodied learning and media production activities that translate complex cultural phenomena into accessible and engaging learning opportunities.

The course speaks directly to the priorities of Erasmus+ projects by promoting inclusion, cultural awareness, digital competence, community engagement and innovative teaching approaches. Participants learn how heritage education fosters empathy, strengthens social cohesion and supports the development of key competences, including cultural literacy, creativity and critical reflection. By developing practical classroom strategies, designing small-scale heritage projects and producing media outputs based on fieldwork, teachers leave equipped to embed cultural heritage education within diverse curricula and school development plans.

Both the 5-day and 10-day versions offer structured, high-quality professional development aligned with European educational goals, supporting organisations in enriching their cultural dimension, strengthening international cooperation and promoting deeper understanding of Europe’s cultural diversity.
