INTRODUCING TV (AND FILM) INTO THE CLASSROOM: THE "WHY" AND THE "HOW"

Introduction and Description

Television and film have become central cultural forms through which young people interpret the world, construct meaning, and negotiate identity. For today’s teachers and educational organisations, the ability to harness audiovisual media for learning is no longer optional: it is a strategic, pedagogical necessity. This course—offered in both 5-day and expanded 10-day formats—provides a rigorous, research-informed foundation for integrating film and TV into teaching, learning, and school-wide development in ways that are intentional, inclusive, and fully aligned with contemporary educational priorities.

Grounded in media literacy studies, multimodal learning theory, and current debates on digital citizenship, the course positions audiovisual material as a sophisticated pedagogical resource capable of enriching cognitive, linguistic, social, and emotional learning. Participants explore the grammar and narrative structures of film, the cognitive benefits of multimodal representation, and the ways visual storytelling can foster empathy, critical thinking, intercultural understanding, and democratic citizenship—key objectives within the Erasmus+ framework. Through case studies, structured viewing models, and practice-based activities, the programme demonstrates how film can support disciplinary learning across languages, humanities, arts, STEM, and cross-curricular competences.

The course also responds to the increasing demand for ethical, culturally responsive, and digitally literate pedagogies in modern schools. Teachers examine issues of representation, stereotyping, safeguarding and accessibility, and learn to select and contextualise audiovisual content responsibly. Both programme formats introduce participants to a wide range of practical techniques for designing pre-viewing, while-viewing, and post-viewing tasks; facilitating inquiry-based discussions; and supporting learner-generated productions using simple digital tools. In addition, participants explore the potential of online collaboration platforms such as eTwinning and the European School Education Platform (ESEP), enabling them to design cross-border projects in which students analyse, reinterpret, or create film-based materials—an approach highly valued in Erasmus+ strategic partnerships and KA1 mobility projects.

The extended 10-day programme allows deeper immersion into film analysis, micro-production, AI-supported multimedia tools, and advanced collaborative project design. The 5-day version provides a condensed but robust foundation suitable for educators seeking practical pedagogical tools within a shorter timeframe. Both formats include opportunities for individual support, reflective dialogue, and the development of actionable plans for integrating film and television into participants’ schools in sustainable, curriculum-aligned ways.

Ultimately, the course equips teachers and school leaders with the conceptual clarity, methodological expertise, and creative confidence needed to transform audiovisual media into powerful catalysts for learning. It invites participants to reimagine their classrooms as dynamic, culturally responsive spaces in which students become critical viewers, thoughtful interpreters, and engaged creators—able to participate meaningfully in today’s complex media landscape. Through this programme, schools strengthen their capacity to innovate, internationalise, and cultivate the digital, social, and cultural competences that underpin the aims of the Erasmus+ programme and the broader European Education Area.
