OUTDOOR AND EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION (LEARNING WITH, IN AND FROM NATURE)

outdoor and experiential learning.jpg
Introduction and Description

This structured Erasmus+ teacher training course explores how outdoor and experiential learning can be meaningfully integrated into early years and primary education in order to support environmental education, learner well-being and inclusive teaching practices. In response to the growing ecological challenges facing contemporary societies, as well as increasing concerns regarding student engagement and mental health, the course positions natural environments as powerful pedagogical spaces that extend and enrich traditional classroom learning.

Grounded in experiential learning theory, place-based education and environmental pedagogy, the course examines how learning with nature (through sensory and relational engagement), in nature (by using outdoor environments as structured learning spaces), and from nature (through sustainability and systems thinking) can enhance both educational quality and learner outcomes. Participants explore how accessible outdoor settings—such as schoolyards, parks, forests and coastal areas—can be transformed into meaningful learning environments aligned with curricular objectives and inclusive educational values.

A strong emphasis is placed on the development of practical competences for designing, facilitating and evaluating outdoor learning experiences. Participants engage in hands-on activities, guided outdoor explorations, collaborative planning and reflective practice, enabling them to transfer learning directly to their own institutional contexts. Key themes include inclusive outdoor pedagogy, differentiation through open-ended tasks, risk–benefit assessment, safeguarding, and the promotion of social-emotional learning and well-being through contact with nature.

The course is explicitly aligned with Erasmus+ priorities, particularly the green transition, by fostering environmental awareness, sustainability education and nature-based solutions in schools. It also contributes to the inclusion and diversity priority by exploring how outdoor learning can reduce barriers to participation and support learners with diverse needs, backgrounds and learning profiles. Furthermore, the course supports innovation and quality in education by equipping educators with contemporary, research-informed pedagogical approaches that promote active learning, learner agency and cross-curricular integration.

Two programme formats are available: a 5-day intensive course, focusing on core concepts and practical application, and a comprehensive 10-day course, allowing for deeper theoretical exploration, extended outdoor practice and project development. Both formats support participants in developing sustainable action plans for their schools and organisations, contributing to long-term educational change in line with European lifelong learning objectives.

Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

1. Pedagogical Understanding

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of outdoor, experiential and place-based learning theories

  • Analyse the role of natural environments in environmental and sustainability education

2. Practical Outdoor Pedagogy

  • Design and facilitate meaningful outdoor learning activities aligned with curriculum goals

  • Apply risk–benefit approaches to ensure safe and inclusive outdoor learning experiences

3. Inclusion, Well-Being and Learner Engagement

  • Implement inclusive outdoor strategies supporting diverse learning needs

  • Use nature-based approaches to enhance well-being, social learning and emotional regulation

4. Environmental Awareness and Sustainability

  • Integrate nature-based solutions and systems thinking into educational practice

  • Foster learners’ environmental responsibility and connection to place

5. Professional Transfer and Impact

  • Adapt outdoor learning approaches to participants’ institutional and cultural contexts

  • Develop actionable plans for sustainable implementation in schools and organisations

Preparation

After registration participants will receive pre-course questionnaire which will be used by the trainer to learn about participants’ teaching backgrounds and to assess their exact needs. Before the beginning of the course a basic reading list will be suggested to participants to prepare for the training. Participants will also be asked to prepare a presentation about themselves, their professional context and their culture. The presentation will be presented on the first day of the course to facilitate networking opportunities. Participants will receive information about the country they are going to visit in order to prepare them for their cultural experience.

Follow up

After the course participants will be asked to share what they have learned with the rest of the staff in their schools. Further books and articles to deepen the topic and contacts with some other practitioners all over Europe and in the world will be suggested by the trainer. The methods shared and explored and the bibliography given will allow the participants to complete and improve their educational path.
